Ammonites lived around 240 to 66 million years ago and were like ancient, sea-dwelling cousins of today's nautilus. Their shells were coiled and could range from the size of a coin to as big as a car tire! These fascinating creatures controlled their depth in the ocean by changing the gas and fluids within their shell chambers, like a submarine. What's cool is that we find their shells as fossils now, giving us clues about the oceans long before humans were around. This gives scientists a look into a world millions of years old!
